The First Two Seconds

October 04, 2026

You can train what your body does in the first two seconds.

Most people picture self-defense as the fight. The strikes, the escapes, the big moment. But the part that shapes everything after it is much smaller: the first two seconds after something feels wrong.

In those two seconds, your body wants to do one of two things. Freeze, or be polite. Both make sense. Most people were raised not to make a scene, so when someone steps too close or reaches for an arm, the first instinct is to hesitate and wonder if you're overreacting.

That hesitation is normal, and that's perfectly ok. It just means nobody has given your body a better default yet. That's what training is for.

Krav Maga is not a sport. There are no rules and no referee waiting for you to get set. So I don't save the "real" work for later. I build a first move you can do without thinking, and I have you repeat it until it feels boring.

Here's the default I teach. Three things, all at once:

Hands up, palms open, in front of your face. It looks calm and it protects your head.

Step back and create distance. Distance buys you time, and time buys you options.

Use your voice, loud. "BACK OFF." "I DON'T KNOW YOU." Volume deters, and it draws attention to what's happening.

That's it. No fancy technique. Traditional arts often overcomplicate self-defense, and under stress, simple wins.

And stress is the point. In a stress drill, you work hard until you're breathing heavy, then you run the first move under fatigue. Your heart is pounding, your arms feel heavy, and your hands still come up. That's when it stops being a technique and starts being yours.

All fitness levels are welcome, and I modify every lesson. The goal isn't to be the strongest person in the room. It's to be the one who moves first.

Try this week

Pick a cue you hit every day, like your front door or your car door.

Each time you reach it, run the default in your head: hands up, step back, voice.

Once a day, somewhere private, do it out loud and for real. Say it like you mean it.

Hit reply and tell me: when something feels off, is your first instinct to freeze, to be polite, or to move? I read the replies myself.

Train the first two seconds. Everything after gets easier.
